Derek's new book is out!!!
Finally after many hours of hard work Derek's new book "The Essential Guide to Tap Dance" has now been launched.
"From the propulsive rhythm of the African dancer, to the swinging ragtime of the American jazz age, tap dancing has evolved into a unique blend of cultural expression, improvisation and creativity, open to all ages and abilities. With clear step-by-step instructions, The Essential Guide to Tap Dance covers basic steps such as the shuffle, pick up and paddle, before building these into traditional combinations such as the time step and shim sham. Additional material includes the history and development of tap dancing; rhythm and musicality; learning the language of tap dancing; the role of improvisation and choreography and finally, the basic steps to advanced techniques. This is the perfect companion to instruct the beginner tap dancer and expand the more experienced dancer's technique, offering full-colour pictures, helpful instruction and essential notes on this vibrant and accessible dance form."

Teach Yourself Tap Dancing
THE BOOK IS STILL OUT ! Hodder Education (publishers) commissioned me to write a 'Teach Yourself' book on, guess what ... Tap Dancing.
So, I said yes, and 4 months later it was done.
Actually it’s really very good! I mean to say that it’s really very explanatory
– lots of detail, and written with an easy entertaining style. It’s got a CD
too AND my original invention – a RHYTHM CLOCK as a means of counting (or
'seeing') Rhythm! I think it’s useful for this aspect alone. Anyway, look for
it – buy it – and if we meet, I will SIGN IT! Book Reviews
(from buyers on Amazon):
"Having attended Derek's classes, I was interested to see how the book measured up. There is an impressive and interesting background to all aspects of Tap, with easy-to-follow exercises. The style of writing is natural, relaxed and encouraging. You can't beat one of Derek's classes, but for those thinking about giving Tap a go, or as a reference guide, this is an excellent book."
"Learning tap just by reading about it in a book is really hard. But Derek's book makes it worth having a go! Definitely worth buying if you're interested in starting to learn tap. There is useful information on tap shoes, for example, that I wish I'd known before buying my first pair! The chatty style and anecdotes are very 'Derek' and really help to keep you motivated. The descriptions of the steps are very clear and act as a useful reminder if you've just started to learn a particular step. The later chapters giving instructions for complete routines are harder to follow but are worth persevering with."
